General Atomics (GA) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Jacobs School of Engineering are pleased to announce that Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) has confirmed his participation as a keynote speaker at Maglev 2008, The 20th International Conference on Magnetically Levitated Systems and Linear Drives. This conference will take place December 15-18, 2008 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt alongside San Diego Bay.

Maglev 2008 is the premier international conference covering all aspects of magnetically levitated, propelled, and guided transportation systems. Conference hosts GA and UCSD expect attendees from 16 countries, with more than 100 papers to be presented including 25 keynote and plenary papers.

Senator Specter is a member of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, and has stated that his “vision for the 21st Century includes high-speed magnetic levitation (maglev) trains capable of traveling at speeds of more than 300 mph.” Senator Specter also supports urban maglev as an enabling technology that has the potential to revolutionize transportation in our cities with its ability to provide efficient, high capacity, and environmentally friendly passenger and goods movement. “Senator Specter’s presence at the Maglev 2008 conference will provide a valuable opportunity for attendees to learn first-hand of Senator Specter’s exciting vision for our transportation future,” said Dr. Sam Gurol, GA’s Director of Maglev Systems.

GA is a San Diego-based company with a 50-year history of successful solutions for energy, defense, and environmental challenges. GA specializes in performing innovative research and development and transforming conceptual results into practical systems. GA operates a maglev test track at its facility in San Diego, Calif., and is promoting the use of maglev and linear drives for a variety of passenger and goods movement transportation applications.

UC San Diego's Jacobs School is one of the premier engineering schools worldwide. Its Center for Control Systems and Dynamics, one of the nation's leading centers for control systems research, is working with GA on developing control design tools for maglev systems.
