Senator Brownback and Congresswoman Nancy Boyda joined me in sending a letter to the President calling for support following the severe weather and flooding created by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike for11 counties in Kansas.
These profound storms resulted in the closure of several highways and roads, outages for both telephone and internet connections, the deployment of swift water rescue, several evacuations, and most severely, two Kansans lost their lives.
During the period of September 11-18, damage estimates total over $3.7 million The state of Kansas has determined that this excessive damage is beyond the scope of local and state capabilities and requires further federal assistance.
We asked the President to support the governor’s request for FEMA to provide additional assistance in the form of Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation. Over the past two years, Kansas has fallen victim to severe and devastating ice storms, flooding, and tornadoes, costing the state over $580 million in recovery and rebuilding. We must act to ease the strain on our public utilities.
