Bunning Announces U.S. Coast Guard Towing Center Of Expertise In Paducah
Washington, DC
Thursday, December 11, 2008
U.S. Senator Jim Bunning today announced that the United States Coast Guard will staff a Towing Center of Expertise in Paducah starting in the summer of 2009. Additional staffing will occur in 2010.
"With Paducah as a hub for river traffic, it is a great fit for the Coast Guard to set up a Towing Center of Expertise there," said Bunning. "The knowledge the Coast Guard brings will ensure safe towing operations along the river. This announcement also means men and women of the Coast Guard will call Paducah their new home."
The Coast Guard is responsible for ensuring that towing vessels transporting cargo in the United States, including hazardous material, meet applicable domestic requirements for the safe transport of such cargoes. The Coast Guard has not kept pace with industry growth or in technological advances. The Paducah Towing Center of Expertise will address this issue through industry focused cadres of inspectors dedicated to various industry segments.
