Senator Bunning talking with Kentucky soldiers in Iraq.
At this critical time in our nation’s history there is no issue more important than our national defense. Currently, our Armed Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are engaged in a struggle that will determine the direction of the Global War on Terror and ultimately, our safety here at home. During this time, I think that it is important to provide our troops with the necessary supplies and equipment they need to complete their mission. As a father of a former service member, I take this very seriously.
It is also very important as we push ahead in Iraq, to require increased responsibility both militarily and diplomatically of the Iraqi government. As outlined in the President’s new strategy for Iraq, I believe it is vital that Iraqi forces take the lead in this mission. In doing so, they will continue to further secure their young democracy in a region that is extremely important to our national security.
I have visited with soldiers at Ft. Knox and Ft. Campbell in Kentucky and heard their stories. I have also spent time with troops in Iraq.
Congress has also consistently passed legislation and initiatives, which the President signed into law, to give our troops pay raises, increases in education and housing benefits, and also help for their immediate families with other beneficial programs and activities.
As we push ahead in Iraq, I think it is important to address the needs of our veterans – both from the current conflict and past wars. I am committed to increasing benefits for Kentucky’s veterans. Many veterans have contacted me to voice their concerns with the proposed changes in veterans’ healthcare. I strongly believe the thrust of the Veterans Administration should be to deliver care to those who need and deserve it.
Throughout my tenure in Congress, I have been a strong supporter of our military and I will continue to fight to support our troops abroad and our veterans at home.
