Stabenow Statement on Supporting the Auto Industry Tuesday night, we took the first big step toward helping our automotive industry with a bipartisan compromise to provide critical bridge-loan funding to keep our automakers going and preserve jobs here at home. This compromise includes House and Senate leaders, as well as the White House.
This legislation is the result of around-the-clock negotiations which recognize that the health of our manufacturing sector is critical to the health of our economy as a whole.
We cannot sit idly by and allow our manufacturing base to be decimated by the credit crisis. In order to stay competitive in a global economy and preserve our middle-class, we must make things in this country. This bipartisan legislation is a commitment to saving that manufacturing base and investing in good-paying, middle-class jobs.
Now that there is agreement with the White House and Congressional leaders, the next step is to schedule a vote and garner the necessary bipartisan votes to pass it. This effort is far from over, but I will continue to fight every day to protect our jobs and our American manufacturing industry.
21st Century GI Bill Signed into Law The 21st Century GI Bill, which Senator Stabenow cosponsored in the Senate, passed and was signed into law on June 30. This bill will help our new veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to transition back to civilian life, just as veterans of past wars were able to. America Needs Fair Trade We live in a global economy that continues to grow and expand. And over the last century, we have consistently proven that Michigan businesses and workers can successfully compete with anyone in the world when the playing field is level. Unfortunately, persistent unfair trade practices by other countries are costing us jobs every day.

Farm Bill Resource Center The U.S. Senate passed
the 2008 Food, Conservation, and Energy Act (H.R. 2419) by a veto-proof
majority of 81-15, which includes funding for nutrition and food
stamp programs, makes critical investments in alternative energy,
protects Michigan lakes and waterways, and supports growers of
specialty crops.
Helping Families Facing Foreclosure The President signed into law U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow's mortgage tax bill. Senator Stabenow’s legislation changes current law that forces individuals to pay an income tax when they have had a part of their mortgage loan forgiven or have been forced to foreclose because of their inability to pay their mortgage.
Senator
Stabenow, with a bipartisan coalition of Senators including
Levin (D-MI), Voinovich (R-OH), Bond (R-MO), Brown (D-OH),
and Specter (R-PA), announced legislation to provide
$25 billion in bridge loans to the domestic auto industry.
With the credit crisis devastating the industry, this
investment will keep our manufacturers moving forward
and help preserve jobs here at home.
Senator
Stabenow and Majority Leader Harry Reid urge the Senate
to pass legislation to invest in advanced technology
vehicles and American jobs.
