Committee Releases Staff Report on Findings of FCC Investigation

Dingell (D-MI), Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Bart Stupak (D-MI), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, today released a Committee on Energy and Commerce Majority Staff report detailing the findings of the Committee’s bipartisan investigation relating to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Energy and Commerce Committee Investigates Adequacy of EPA E-Waste Regulations

Washington, D.C. - A key Congressional Committee has launched an investigation into how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the export of hazardous waste that comes from used electronic devices like television sets and computer monitors. Electronic waste (commonly referred to as "e-waste") often contains hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury and chromium. Despite its hazardous nature, much exported e-waste goes unregulated. The exported waste is often sent to developing nations with much weaker environmental regulations where it causes significant public health problems.

Dingell, Stupak: New GAO Report Demonstrates Need for Strengthening Nuclear Safety

Washington, DC - Reps. John D. Dingell (D-MI), the Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Bart Stupak (D-MI), the Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, today released a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report that concludes that the Department of Energy's (DOE) nuclear safety program for its 205 high-hazard facilities lacks independence and proper safeguards. High-hazard nuclear facilities are facilities where an accident could have serious consequences for workers and the public. The GAO report says at least 31 facilities have been operating for extended periods of time in noncompliance with nuclear safety licensing requirements.

Subcommittee Introduction

The Committee on Energy and Commerce has a total of six subcommittees, five of which have the authority to consider legislation; the sixth serves an oversight role.  Each subcommittee is authorized to meet, hold hearings, receive testimony, markup legislation, and report to the Committee on all matters referred to it.  The subcommittees have jurisdiction on issues ranging from healthcare to consumer product safety, as well as fuel efficiency and drug safety.  For more information on each subcommittee, click on the tabs below.

Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection

The Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection has jurisdiction over Interstate and foreign commerce, including all trade matters within the jurisdiction of the full committee; Regulation of commercial practices (the FTC), including sports-related matters; Consumer affairs and consumer protection, including privacy matters generally; consumer product safety (the CPSC); product liability; and motor vehicle safety; Regulation of travel, tourism, and time.

Energy and Air Quality

The Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality has jurisdiction over national energy policy generally; fossil energy, renewable energy resources and synthetic fuels; energy conservation; energy information; energy regulation and utilization; utility issues, and regulation of nuclear facilities; interstate energy compacts; nuclear energy and waste; and, the Clean Air Act; all laws, programs, and government activities affecting such matters

Environment and Hazardous Materials

The Subcommittee on Environment and Hazardous Waste has jurisdiction over environmental protection in general, including the Safe Drinking Water Act and risk assessment matters; Solid waste, hazardous waste and toxic substances, including Superfund and RCRA; Mining, oil, gas, and coal combustion wastes; and, Noise pollution control.

Where can I find Witness lists and Witness testimony?

Witness lists are posted to our Web site on the Schedule page prior to the hearing.  When the hearing has completed, the witness lists will move to the respective hearing page.  Witness testimony is posted once it has been delivered live by the witness before the Members of the Subcommittee or Full Committee.  Once the testimony is considered public, then it is posted to the Hearings page dedicated to that particular hearing.

How can I find the status of legislation?

Thomas Legislation on the Internet is a useful tool in researching the status of House bills and resolutions.  A link to search bills in Thomas is located at the bottom of each page on our Web site.  We will post Selected Legislation on our Web site in order to provide information on legislation that the Committee has under consideration.
