Today, we face the greatest confluence of challenges in our country’s recent history.  It is critical that we regain our place in the world with a new security policy that serves our national interest, recaptures our moral authority, works with our allies, modernizes our military, and confidently projects our values.   Now as much as ever, our country needs to return to a foreign policy and national security strategy built on bipartisan consensus and executed with non-partisan competence.  As New York’s first Senator to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee and as the only member of the Senate to serve on U.S. Joint Forces Command’s Transformation Advisory Group, I pay very close attention to and work frequently on these critical issues to New York and our nation.

Whether it is bringing an end to the war in Iraq, bolstering our efforts in Afghanistan, continuing to provide strong support for Israel, or pushing for an end to the genocide in Darfur, I remain focused on pursuing real solutions to our most critical national security and foreign policy challenges.

Fighting to Change Course in Iraq

I believe that we must bring an end to the war in Iraq. As the first New York Senator to serve on the Senate Armed Services Committee, I remain focused on the many challenges we face there. I have urged the Bush Administration to end the failed policy in Iraq that forces our troops to police a civil war. And I am working hard in the Senate to advance a strategy to redeploy our troops out of Iraq as quickly and as safely as possible. MORE»

Israel and the Middle East

Israel ’s right to exist, and exist in safety, should never be put into question. Israel is confronting many of the toughest challenges in its history, in a neighborhood that is less secure than ever. It is vital that we stand by our friend and our ally and that we stand by our own values. We need to continue to insist that any Palestinian government renounce terrorism and recognize Israel’s right to exist. As events unfold, we need to be prepared to resume America’s indispensable role in working with the Israelis and the Palestinians to find a just and lasting resolution to the conflict. MORE»

Action on Darfur

The crisis in Sudan demands immediate action.  In July 2004, the United States Senate recognized the violence in Darfur, where at least 200,000 people have died and at least 2.5 million others have been displaced , as genocide.   Countless women and girls are being violently and sexually abused and continue to live in fear.  Escalating violence has forced the evacuation of many vital relief workers.  In the face of this unconscionable crisis, the United States, like all nations who stand for freedom and respect for human rights, has the moral responsibility to condemn, in the strongest manner possible, the actions of the Sudanese government against its own people and to do all that is possible to end the genocide.  MORE»

Global Challenges

We face a significant number of additional challenges around the world. Iran’s role in the Middle East, the threat of nuclear terrorism, promoting human rights and equal opportunity, and global warming all have serious national security implications. American leadership in the 21 st Century demands that we rise to address these challenges, and in the Senate, I have worked hard to do my part by speaking out and introducing and helping to pass legislation in each of these areas.  MORE»
