New twist on auto bailout would net Florida cars that get 42 miles per gallon

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The heads of the big three U.S. car companies today are on Capitol Hill for the second day in a row, trying to convince Congress to give them billions of dollars. But Florida's senior U.S. senator is putting an interesting twist on whether he might vote for a government bailout of the domestic automakers.


Sen. Bill Nelson said in a statement released this morning that the U.S. car companies need to publicly state they will not continue to oppose Florida's latest move to adopt California's standards for cleaner emissions from cars - emission standards that would yield much higher miles per gallon.

Navy: Mayport to get nuclear carrier

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Navy has told U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson that Mayport Naval Station soon will become home to a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that will bring more than 3,000 personnel to Jacksonville.

Congress being asked to ban oil trading

 

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson has filed legislation to ban unregulated speculative trading of oil futures and other energy commodities as a way to curb the unchecked run-up in crude oil and gasoline prices that took off after Congress deregulated electronic trading of energy futures in late 2000.
