At Home

• Recycle.

  •    2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year can be saved by recycling half of the waste your household generates.

• Replace your incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL).
  •    CFL’s use 60% to 75% less energy than a regular incandescent bulb. By replacing just three frequently used incandescent light bulbs with CFL’s, you could save about 300 lbs of carbon and $60 per year.

• Turn off and unplug electronic devices when you aren’t using them.

  •    Turning off devices such as televisions, DVD players, stereos, and computers when not in use can save several thousand lbs of carbon dioxide a year. Also, by unplugging electronics from the wall when you are not using them you utilize even less carbon dioxide.

• Check your tires monthly to make sure they are properly inflated.
  •     Proper inflation can improve gas mileage by more than 3%.

• Choose energy efficient appliances when making purchases.
  •    Look for the EPA Energy Star label on new appliances when shopping for the most efficient model. If each household in the U.S. replaced existing appliances with the most efficient models available, we’d eliminate 175 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year!

• Reduce your waste.

  •    Buy minimally packaged goods and reusable products.

• Buy from your local farmer.
  •    By buying from your local farmer you support your local businesses and reduce the carbon dioxide used to transport food.

• Install a programmable thermostat.
  •    Programmable thermostats automatically lower the heat or air conditioning at night and raise them again in the morning. Installing a programmable thermostat can save you almost $100/year.

• Better prepare your house for the weather.
  •    Caulking and weather-stripping of windows and doors keep in air-conditioning and heat, while saving 1,700 pounds of carbon dioxide and $274 per year.

• Check to see if your utility service checks for energy efficiency.
  •    Many utilities offer free home energy inspections to find where your home is poorly insulated or energy inefficient. Having your house inspected can save up to 30% off your energy bill and 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
