Internships

A congressional internship is an excellent opportunity to learn about government and gain valuable skills and experience. Congressional internships are ideal for individuals seeking careers in law, public affairs, business or political science; but anyone who is interested is strongly urged to apply. Internships are available for individuals in both my Washington, D.C. and Portland offices. Students from Oregon and those who arrange to receive college credit for their internship will be given priority, but all applications will be considered.

Interns are valued contributors to my work. They assist my staff and me with constituent services, administrative tasks, public policy research, and more. In Washington, D.C., interns have opportunities to attend interesting and informative briefings and social events. At home in my district office, interns can join my staff and me on visits with key government, business and nonprofit organizations.

Internships are available year-round, and terms and dates of internships are flexible. Applications for summer positions are accepted between February 15 and March 30 for the following summer. Placements for summer internships will usually be made by mid-April. Because the needs of high school students are generally different than those of college students, there is a separate program for high school students. These students will work with their school advisors and my staff to tailor an experience that will help them meet their educational goals.

College students and graduates who are interested in interning in either of my offices should fax the following application [PDF 61.2KB] [MS Word] with a cover letter and resume to 202-225-9497 (Washington, D.C.) or 503-326-2901 (Portland), attention: Intern Coordinator. Please indicate to which office you are applying.

High school applicants who are interested in an internship should submit the following application [PDF 70.2KB] [MS Word] with a cover letter and resume.
