Higher Education Resources If you are interested in pursuing school beyond high school, whether at a community college or four-year institution, the following links direct you to essential resources for financial aid for higher education. U.S. Department of Education Office of Federal Student Aid The Office of Federal Student Aid is the primary student financial aid resource on the web. Available in English and Spanish. Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA is the first step in obtaining federal financial aid for higher education. Oregon Student Assistance Commission OSAC is the state student financial aid agency for Oregon. Financial Aid for Students This Information Web page, prepared by the Congressional Research Service for Members of Congress, guides students through the process of locating and applying for financial aid. Resources in My Office Congressional Page Program For more than 100 years, messengers known as Pages have served the United States Congress. Duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional complex, including preparing the chamber for sessions, and carrying bills and amendments to the House floor. Every session, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives chooses a different group of members of Congress to submit nominations for the Congressional Page Program in Washington, DC. This year, I have been chosen and currently am accepting applications. The program will begin on Sunday, June 10, 2007 and will conclude on Friday, June 29, 2007. Click here to print a copy of the application [PDF 541.8KB]. Applications are due in my Portland district office by Friday, March 30, 2007. Qualified applicants need to be at least sixteen years old prior to the start of the program and must have completed the 10th grade but not started the 12th grade. They must be a citizen of the United States and a full-time resident of the First Congressional District. In addition, applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA in their major subjects. Again, completed applications with accompanying documentation must be received in my Portland District Office no later than Friday, March 30, 2007. On March 31, 2007, an independent selection panel will meet to evaluate the applications and select a nominee. Congressional Internships for Oregon's First District I offer student internships opportunities in both my Portland and Washington, D.C. offices to help Oregon high school or college students interested in a hands-on opportunity to learn about Federal policy and the ways in which elected officials represent their constituents. Congressional Art Contest Every year my office holds an art contest for high school students in the First Congressional District. This year's entries are due on April 25. The winning artwork will hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building for one year. Leadership Programs Congressional Youth Leadership Council The Congressional Youth Leadership Council program scholars represent the upper echelon of today's youth in both academic performance and community leadership. Each student is hand-selected for nomination by distinguished educators, mentors or CYLC program alumni, ensuring that every participant possesses the drive and determination to emerge as a future& world leader. U.S. House of Representatives Education Resources The U.S. House of Representatives Education Resources page provides access to historical documents related to the democratic process. Library of Congress The Library of Congress is the U.S. government's online resource for materials and information about U.S. and world culture. The Library also maintains THOMAS, a searchable database of legislative information. This page accesses PDF documents. You will need Adode Reader to access these documents.
