Childers Helps Constituents File for Rebate Before Deadline

October 8, 2008

Washington, DC - Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS) held office hours today to help constituents file for their stimulus checks before the October 15 deadline. A representative from Internal Revenue Services (IRS) joined the Congressman to assist constituents in their filing.

"With record high energy and food prices and difficult economic times, I want to make sure that North Mississippians receive their stimulus checks if they have not already," said Congressman Childers. "It is not too late for individuals to file for their rebates. I encourage them to do so, and to use my office as a resource for necessary information."

Earlier this year, Congress passed an economic stimulus package that provided most American households with a rebate check in order to help make ends meet during these tough economic times.  However, over 51,000 Mississippi seniors and veterans have not received their checks because they have not filed the proper paperwork.

Many seniors and veterans do not know that they need to file a tax return in order to receive a stimulus check.  However, households have until October 15th in order to file for a stimulus check.  Individual seniors and disabled veterans will receive a tax rebate between $300 and $600 per individual (up to $1,200 per married couple), plus an additional $300 per child.

Individuals who believe they are eligible for a tax rebate, or know a family member who has not received theirs, should call the Tupelo district office at 662-844-5437 or the IRS toll-free at 1-866-234-2942.
