When FDR signed the Social Security Act 67 years ago, he made a
promise -- a promise that every hard-working American should be able
to retire with dignity. Today, the Social Security system provides
46 million retirees, spouses, survivors and children with that
dignity and much-needed economic security.
I oppose privatizing Social Security and handing over Americans' retirement to be held hostage to the fluctuations of the stock market. I am working every day to keep the protections we need and to preserve the dignity, security, and hope that Social Security has brought to millions of Americans.

Ways and Means Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Pete Stark and Social Subcommittee Ranking Member Sander Levin sent the following letter to President Bush today outlining their grave concern regarding the preparation of the 2006 reports of the Board of Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds. Specifically, Ranking Members Stark and Levin question the Administration's unprecedented recess appointments of John L. Palmer and Thomas R. Saving to serve a second term as public trustees of the Social Security and Medicare programs, and its effect on the pending 2006 reports.
