Boehner Statement on President-Elect Obama’s Selection of Peter Orszag as Budget Director

Washington, Nov 25 - House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement after President-elect Barack Obama announced Congressional Budget Office Director Peter Orszag would join his Administration’s economic team as Director of the Office of Management and Budget:

“This is a difficult time for our nation.  Working families are struggling to pay their bills, and small businesses find themselves torn between staying in business and laying people off over the holidays.  We should respond to these challenges not by spending more of Americans’ hard-earned money and increasing their pain, but by removing barriers to their prosperity.

“The President-elect is assembling an experienced, qualified team of economic advisors.  But the advice of working families should be taken into account as well.  Americans simply do not believe more government spending will get our economy moving again, and our hope is that the President-elect and his team will listen to them.  Rather than increasing government spending by $700 billion, Democrats and Republicans should use this opportunity to work together for policies that will truly help our economy get back on track – policies that will encourage job creation and rebuild 401(k)s by reforming our energy policies, stopping unnecessary lawsuits, and letting Americans keep more of what they earn.”

NOTE: Boehner has introduced a Rapid Recovery Plan for economic growth that emphasizes pro-growth policies such as energy reforms that would create one million new jobs, stronger 401(k)s, and tax relief rather than new government spending.
