As Dems Push Economic Spending Spree, Boehner Counters with Pro-Growth GOP Alternative
GOP Plan Cuts Taxes to Rebuild 401(k)s, Assist Families with Costs of Living, Help Small Businesses Create Jobs

Washington, Oct 28 - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) continues to peddle congressional Democrats’ massive collection of new Washington spending cleverly disguised as “economic stimulus.”  The Democrats’ latest tactic?  A conference call with liberal economists hand-picked by Democratic leaders to boost their calls for the spending onslaught.  The Hill has the details:

“Democratic leaders looked to bolster their case Monday for an economic stimulus package that they could push in a lame-duck session.”

“Economists have offered support for a stimulus package of between $150 billion to $300 billion.  Most have said the package should include investments in infrastructure, aid to cities and states, an extension of unemployment insurance and additional money for food stamps.  Democrats have also signaled an interest in using some of the package to support broadband Internet access and jobs in green industries.”

As families, seniors, and small businesses struggle to keep their heads above water during today’s economic turmoil, should Speaker Pelosi, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), and their Democratic colleagues in Congress really be asking them to bankroll a $300 billion government spending spree?  House Republicans don’t think so, and neither do the American people.  That’s why House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) is proposing a pro-growth, pro-jobs package to get our economy moving again through lower taxes to allow families to keep more of what they earn, an “all of the above” energy strategy to lower energy costs and create up to one million new jobs, and reforms to give small businesses an incentive to invest and create new jobs.

Congressional Quarterly reports on the rapid economic recovery plan this morning:

“According to a draft of the GOP plan, Boehner would double the size of the child tax credit from $1,000 to $2,000 per child, reduce the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, suspend the capital gains tax on equities purchased over the next two years and allow all U.S. businesses to expense newly acquired business property.  It would amend existing law so that expanded offshore oil and gas drilling can begin ‘in months, not years.’”

By going to a zero capital gains tax, the alternative being outlined by Leader Boehner will help Americans rebuild their 401(k)s and encourage investment.

Poll after poll shows that this type of pro-growth package – not the massive slate of new spending proposed by Democrats – is what the American people support to get the economy back on track.

  • A Fox News poll released last week shows fix out of 10 Americans support tax cuts – as opposed to government spending increases – to get the economy moving again.
  • And a Rasmussen Reports survey released a week ago notes, “Fifty-eight percent (58%) of U.S. voters say more tax cuts will better stimulate the economy than new government spending, even as Congress considers a second stimulus plan that could cost as much as $300 billion.”

With the American people firmly on their side, House Republicans will continue to stand up to Speaker Pelosi, Sen. Obama, and their free-spending Democratic allies in charge of Congress.  Will Democrats finally abandon their plans to force taxpayers to foot the bill for their pork-laden “stimulus” sham and join Republicans in supporting a real plan to create jobs, rebuild 401(k)s, and get our economy moving again?
