Clyburn Addresses More Than 500 Graduates from Tuskegee University During Commencement Exercises

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Graduates were addressed by Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.), Majority Whip for the 110th Congress of the U.S. House of Representatives. The civil rights activist, politician and philanthropist, who has served the 16th District of South Carolina since 1993, is the second citizen of that state and the second black to be chosen for the third-ranking position in the House. Clyburn received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the event.

WASHINGTON, DC— As a proud graduate of an HBCU, South Carolina State University, I understand the important role that HBCUs play in the development of our country. It is essential that this Congressional body do all it can to support these institutions and the students that they serve. I requested the introduction of this bill, because many of the buildings and facilities at some of these fine colleges and universities are in deteriorating states. This bill goes a long way towards making it possible for many of these schools to refurbish their infrastructure to better serve the needs of their faculties and student bodies.

Introduction of Judge Matthew J. Perry, Jr. Into the South Carolina Hall of Fame

Matthew Perry lived the inspirational words given to us by Maya Angelou. Her beautiful imagery of a tapestry of equal threads is a reminder of the Constitution’s connecting thread that “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” Whether arguing before the court or adjudicating from the bench, Matthew Perry weaves the common thread of equality. Not a bad legacy for a young black boy, whose value early in life was seen as less than. Today he is one of the shining threads that have created the rich fabric of this state, and it is my honor to present to you Judge Matthew J. Perry, Jr.
