            Washington, D.C. – The new federal assessment estimating that here are 85.4 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered recoverable natural gas hydrates on the Alaska North Slope “highlights the need for an Alaska gas line”, U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) said today.

            “This U.S. Geological Survey assessment clearly shows the need and viability of a new Alaska gas line,” said Young, the Ranking Member on the Natural Resources Committee.

            “In addition, I’m hopeful this new information will persuade President-elect Obama and the Democratic Congress to work with the Alaska Congressional Delegation to expedite the permitting and construction process on the gas line, and limit opportunities for the extreme environmental organizations to file frivolous lawsuits against the project.

            “ needs Alaska’s resources and we are willing to produce them in the most environmentally-sound manner possible.

            “Should the development of natural gas hydrates prove to be economically viable, this will be a valuable energy source for our nation for many years to come,” Young said.
