Washington, D.C. – Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-TX) today made the following statement regarding Democrat subpoenas for White House officials in the investigation into the firing of eight U.S. Attorneys:

“The White House is cooperating with the Committee’s investigation. They have offered to be interviewed by Members of the Committee. These subpoenas have more to do with TV coverage than uncovering the facts.

“The Committee has now met three times on this matter and looked over thousands of pages of documents. There is no evidence the White House acted improperly.

"U.S. Attorneys are political appointees and can be removed by the President at any time for any reason. The President has a right to be served by those who support his policies."
