Washington, D.C. - Ninety years have passed since the guns of World War I fell silent on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 1918. Sadly, the armistice of the “war to end all wars” turned out to be a mere reprieve from warfare, and the men and women of the armed forces have been called upon again and again to defend our nation and the liberties we cherish.

In order to commemorate veterans of all wars, the Armistice Day holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. A proclamation by President Dwight D. Eisenhower stated,

“On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”

On this Veterans’ Day, I encourage all Americans to fulfill President Eisenhower’s call to make this a day of remembrance and honor the men and women who have made extraordinary sacrifices to preserve our liberty and way of life. Veterans embody the values upon which our nation was founded and I join with all Americans in thanking them for their service.

May God bless our veterans and all who wear the uniform, and may God continue to bless the .
