A Salute to Veterans and current Members of the Armed Forces

By Congressman Gene Green

Memorial Day is a time to pause to remember the service and sacrifice of those who have fought to defend our nation.  On Monday, May 26, once again our nation gathered to honor and remember the men and women who have paid the highest price for the freedoms we too often take for granted.

The recent deployment of our troops was a reminder of the many sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform.  Children were born during their fathers’ deployment; and husbands and wives acted as single parents while their spouses were at war.   Parents prayed for their children’s safe return.  The many families now being reunited are the fortunate ones, while some will never enjoy a homecoming.

We celebrate the safe return of the POWs and the bravery of all troops as they overcame the perils of war—sniper fire, ambushes, windstorms, and civilian unrest.  As our country helps to rebuild Iraq, we must continue to pray for the safe return of our troops who still face hostilities.

In times like these, with the battle won and the enemy defeated, we should remember our veterans’ willingness to serve and sacrifice for their country.  In doing so, we must keep our promises to provide veterans with the benefits that their service to this nation has earned them.

This year like no other we salute our brave men and women for their service.
