Houston, TX - The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Houston Local 341 recently honored Congressman Gene Green with the 2004 Alfred K. Whitehead Legislative Award for his work on the SAFER Fire Fighters Act. Each year the IAFF recognizes members of Congress who act as champions of fire fighter issues by passing specific legislation or providing leadership in support of multiple issues. Roland Chavez, President of IAFF Local 341 presented the award.
“I am honored to receive this award and I accepted it on behalf of all the hardworking firefighters and first responders who protect our community each and every day,” said Rep. Gene Green.
The SAFER Fire Fighters Act was drafted in the wake of the 9/11 tragedies. Passed by Congress in 2003, the SAFER ACT enables more fire departments to operate with safe staffing levels.
“For many Americans, when there is an emergency they call 911 and the emergency workers respond quickly,” added Green. “But it takes resources, commitment, and hard work to make the system work right and save lives.”
The SAFER ACT allows Houston Fire Departments to receive grants to help pay the salary and benefits of new fire fighters over a five-year period.
