GREEN ANNOUNCES DECORATIONS, OPPORTUNITIES
FOR KOREAN WAR VETS

Houston, TX - Congressman Gene Green (D-TX) today announced that veterans of the Korean War, or their surviving family, are eligible to receive decorations for their service. In conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War, the Department of Defense is dispensing lapel pins for veterans or their families, and offering communities a chance to become part of the commemoration of the history of the Korean War. The Republic of Korea (South Korea, ROK) is offering veterans or their families the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

"Approximately 1.8 million U.S. veterans of the Korean War are eligible to receive this medal that was initially offered to them more than 50 years ago, but never issued," Green stated.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korean territory. The armistice on July 27, 1953, ended the fighting, although a formal peace treaty has never been completed.

"Almost fifty years ago, on June 25, 1950, North Korean units launched a massive onslaught that threatened to drive South Korean and American forces from the Korean peninsula. However, through the force of our arms and the courage of our armed forces, we managed to not only halt, but drive back the numerically superior North Korean forces," Green added. "I am pleased that we are recognizing and paying tribute to the Korean war veterans who sacrificed their lives fighting for world democracy."

To apply, veterans must provide a copy of their discharge paper, commonly known as a "DD-214," or a corrected version of that document, a "DD-215." National Guard members must provide their statement of service equivalent, "NGB Form 22." Next of kin to eligible deceased veterans can also apply for the medal. Questions about how to apply for or request the medal should be directed to: the Air Force Personnel Center at 800-558-1404, or the Awards and Decorations Section 210-565-2432/2520/2516 or by writing to HQ AFPC/DPPPRA, 550 C Street West, Suite 12, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas 78150-4714. To order a lapel pin, veterans or their family can call 703-604-0822.

Communities, active duty, reserve, national Guard military groups, installations, units, and posts have an opportunity to participate in the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemorative Community Program by hosting three events in a year to honor those who served in the Korean or support school programs in teaching the history of this era. They will receive an official recognition, including permission to use the Korean War 50th Anniversary logo and flag. The purpose of the Korean War commemorations is to honor the Korean War veterans, their family members, recognize the contributions and sacrifices made on the home front and to educate every generation of Americans on the historical impact of the Korean War in saving a nation. Information on Korean War commemorations can be found by contacting the DoD 50th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee veteran can call 703-604-0831.
