Statement on the passing of former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson
Washington, DC - My wife Helen and I first knew Lady Bird Johnson during my tenure in the Texas House, when she graciously invited Helen to lunch at the ranch. She was an example for all of us and a symbol of what's good about America. As her husband moved from the House to the Senate, the Vice Presidency and finally to the highest office in the land, Lady Bird was always refined, poised and full of grace.
Every child who has gone to school in our country benefits from her dedication to education. We've seen the fruits of her effort in programs like Head Start that have improved the lives of literally millions of Americans. I am especially happy that she lived to see the U.S. Department of Education Building in Washington, D.C. named for her husband in recognition of his and her commitment to America’s children. It was my great privilege to have met them both. My condolences go out to her family. We will all mourn her passing tonight.
