Chabot Again Named "Taxpayers Hero" by Council for Citizens Against Government Waste
September 12, 2008
Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) has again been named a “Taxpayers Hero” by the non-partisan Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW).  Chabot was recognized for consistently voting to reduce wasteful federal spending, reform the earmark process and provide tax relief to working Americans. Chabot’s score of 97 percent ranked him among the top 14 members of the House.

Chabot Supports Resolution Commending Honor Flight

With the support of Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati), the House of Representatives approved a resolution (H. Res. 1287) commending the Honor Flight Network for helping World War II veterans travel to the nation’s capital to visit the World War II Memorial created in their honor. Chabot is a cosponsor of the resolution.

Chabot Applauds Ohio Senators for Introducing Companion Bill to Save the Delta Queen

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) today applauded Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) for introducing legislation to allow the historic Delta Queen steamboat to continue to operate as an overnight passenger vessel.  The bill introduced in the Senate today is identical to legislation Chabot introduced last October in the House.

Westside Resident Offers Testimony On Reforming Small Business Health Insurance

At the invitation of Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati), James Eckstein of Delhi gave testimony before the House Small Business Committee on ways to increase access to affordable health insurance for small businesses and their employees. Mr. Eckstein is the President of C.A. Eckstein Roofing, Inc., a second-generation family-owned company, with a third generation actively involved in the day-to-day operations. C.A. Eckstein Roofing is based in Delhi and employs 35 people.

Chabot Commends House for Passing Important Cyber-Security Bill

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) commended the House for passing legislation containing important cyber-security provisions aimed at deterring identity theft and other cyber-crimes.  The legislation, passed by the House last night, H.R. 5938, was amended in the Senate to include provisions similar to those introduced last year by Chabot and Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA).

Chabot: Proposed DHL Agreement Deserves Scrutiny

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) expressed concerns about the proposed agreement by DHL to eliminate its North American express air cargo operations during a House Judiciary Committee hearing today on competition in the package delivery industry. Chabot, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, took a lead roll in pressing Chairman Conyers to hold a hearing on the subject.

Chabot Announces Federal Funds for Cincinnati Police Department's Crime Cameras

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Westwood) today announced that the U.S. Department of Justice has finalized a federal grant of $1,967,566 to the Cincinnati Police Department (CPD) for its crime surveillance camera initiative.  The funding was included by Chabot as a line item in the Consolidated Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008.

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) today delivered a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), requesting a special session of Congress to consider legislation intended to lower gas prices and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.  Yesterday, the House narrowly passed a motion to adjourn for the next five weeks, without addressing important energy legislation.  Congressman Chabot voted against the resolution to adjourn.

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati), a senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee, introduced a constitutional amendment today reaffirming the right of states’ to use the death penalty for crimes against children. Chabot introduced H. J. Res. 96 in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision yesterday, which held that the Eighth Amendment bars the death penalty for crimes, including the rape of children, when the crime does not result in death.

Congressman Steve Chabot offered a motion to during the debate of the Coast Guard Authorization Act (H.R. 2830) to allow the historic Delta Queen steamboat to continue operating for the next 10 years.  The motion was narrowly defeated by a vote of 195 to 208.

House Passes Small Business Technological Innovation Bill

The House passed The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Reauthorization Act, H.R. 5819, today by a vote of 368 to 43.  The bill extends the SBIR and STTR programs through fiscal year 2010.

In a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, Chabot congratulated the students and teachers of Elm Avenue Elementary School, Hilltop Primary School, Our Lady of Visitation, and St. James School in White Oak. These school were all named 2007 Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.

Chabot Nominates Students to Military Academies

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Westwood) has nominated 20 local students to attend military service academies next fall. The nominations are to the United States Military Academy (USMA), U.S. Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy.  Prospective students must be nominated by their Congressman, Senator, or the Vice President of the United States in order to attend a service academy.  The individual academies rank the nominees and offer an appointment to the individuals they select as qualified candidates.

Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati) spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives today in favor of legislation to increase services and access to small business loans for veterans and military reservists. The House voted 406 – 2 to restore critical provisions to the Military Reservist and Veteran Small Business Reauthorization and Opportunity Act of 2007 that were previously stripped out by a Senate amendment.

The House of Representatives today passed the Emergency and Disaster Assistance Fraud Penalty Enhancement Act of 2007 (S.863), a bill which would create a new criminal offense and enhance current federal penalties for fraud in connection with major disasters and emergency benefits. The legislation, which is sponsored by Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL), is the Senate companion to a bill that was introduced earlier this year by Congressman Steve Chabot (R-Cincinnati).

By a vote of 402 to 2, the House of Representatives today passed bipartisan legislation authored by Congressman Nick Lampson (D-TX) and Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) that targets Internet child predators. H.R. 3791, the Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online Act (SAFE Act), strengthens protections for children while they are online by providing law enforcement with improved resources, while also increasing the penalties for service providers that host child pornography on their servers.
