In May 2008, Frank joined New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) and health care advocates at a news conference to tout Frank's Protecting Children's Health Coverage Act of 2008, which blocks a directive from the Bush administration restricting the ability of states to cover uninsured children through the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), known in New Jersey as FamilyCare.
In March 2008, Frank spoke at an anti-war rally during a visit by President Bush to New Jersey. While the president visited a debt counseling agency to discuss the mortgage crisis, Frank said the President's visit was part of a weak response to the mortgage squeeze and that we needed to get out of Iraq so that we could focus on priorities here at home.
Frank, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Rush Holt and Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer highlight the need for federal funding for clean renewable energy programs and green-job training during a visit to the Isles' YouthBuild Institute in Trenton.
Frank speaks with high school students during their visit to Washington, D.C. about the College Cost Reduction Act, a bill which passed the House that day. The legislation, which Frank supported, provides the largest increase in college aid since the GI bill, including $262 million in assistance to New Jersey students and their families.
Frank speaks with children at the Red Bank Summer Camp, where he announced the passage of legislation that includes a provision he championed that would expand to New Jersey a popular federal program that provides meals to low-income children during the summer.
After the University of Tennessee (UT) women's basketball team beat Rutgers
in the Championship game, Frank presented Cong. John Duncan (R-TN),
who represents UT, with Jersey tomatoes and "Fat Cat" sandwiches
from the Rutgers University campus. The lawmakers had placed
a friendly wager on the outcome of the basketball game.
Actresses Allison Janey and Mary McCormack, who starred in the television
show The West Wing, visited Frank on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation to discuss funding for research into juvenile
diabetes.
In May, Frank spoke at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital about
an additional $100 million New Jersey will receive from the federal
government to fund the FamilyCare Program through September.
Frank met with Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor, to discuss cancer
research, prevention and survivorship.
Frank, Senator Lautenberg and Cindy Zipf from Clean Ocean Action speak
about the BEACH Protection Act, legislation introduced by the two New
Jersey lawmakers to update and strengthen beach water quality standards.
Musician Sheryl Crow and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation recently
met with Frank to discuss funding for breast cancer research.
Recently, Frank spoke to students about issues affecting young Americans
during Rutgers University's annual "Tent State University" event.
