Burlco Towns Net Homeland Security Grant

Cinnaminson, Edgewater Park, Evesham, New Hanover Twps. benefit

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jim Saxton (N.J.-3rd) announced that four Burlington County police departments have been awarded $127,166 in federal grants under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP).

"Municipal police budgets are tight, so I hope these grants will provide important tools like Video Detective that they might not otherwise be able to purchase," Saxton said. "Homeland Security starts at the local level."

The Video Detective enhances the poor-quality images from both VHS or DVD formats given to the police in crime cases. The Video Detective is portable and can also be used for remote surveillance.

The following towns will receive funding:

! Cinnaminson police will receive $40,159 for Video Detective;

! Edgewater Park police will receive $40,159 for Video Detective;

! Evesham police will receive $40,159 for Video Detective; and,

! New Hanover police will receive $6,689 for the Rugged Night Vision Monocular Kit.

The grants are provided in order to enhance and support regional response for smaller law enforcement and emergency responder agencies. The money will be used by each township to purchase new responder and security equipment, as well as send representative officers and emergency responders to training sessions provided by the CEDAP through the Office of Grants and Training.

The allocation of the grants is being made under the Fiscal Year 2005 Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act (Public Law 108-334). The total funding for CEDAP was $50 million which is broken down to be used for direct equipment procurement, testing and validation for commercially available technology, and for training, workshops, administration and evaluation.
