Capps Honors UCSB’s Men’s Soccer Team

Welcomes Team to Washington, D.C., in Celebration of Its Historic National Championship Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Lois Capps welcomed the University of California Santa Barbara’s Men’s Soccer Team to Washington, D.C., in celebration of its historic National Championship season.  Last December UCSB went undefeated in the NCAA Tournament, beating UCLA in the championship game to claim the second Division I Title in the school’s history.  In addition to meeting with Congresswoman Capps, the team was honored by President Bush in a ceremony at the White House.

“As a member of the Santa Barbara community and a proud alumna of UCSB, I want to commend the Men’s Soccer Team for its historic National Championship and welcome the players to Washington, D.C.,” said Capps.  “These hardworking student-athletes, together with their Head Coach Tim Vom Steeg and his coaching staff, made us all very proud last December with their impressive victory over UCLA in the National Championship game.  The high quality of the UCSB soccer program is but one example of the fine institution that is UCSB, home to 5 Nobel Laureates as well as stellar athletic and extra-curricular programs.   As we eagerly look forward to the start of the new school year this fall, I know we can expect more great things from UCSB both academically and athletically.  In the mean time… Go Gauchos!”
