Capps’ Statement For California Coastal Commission Hearing On The Proposed Cabrillo Port LNG Facility

Congresswoman Capps Testified Against The Project Before The State Lands Commission Earlier This Week, Continues To Vigorously Oppose Dangerous, Dirty, And Unnecessary Project

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In anticipation of today’s Coastal Commission hearing in Santa Barbara on the proposed BHP Cabrillo Port LNG facility, Congresswoman Lois Capps released the following statement.  Congresswoman Capps testified earlier this week against the project before the State Lands Commission on April 9th, in Oxnard.  The State Lands Commission voted against the project in a 2 to 1 decision, echoing many of the concerns about the project that the Congresswoman noted in her testimony.

“The Cabrillo Port LNG project is fatally flawed and I hope the Coastal Commission will object to the project today,” said Capps a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Natural Resources Committee.  “The need for this dirty and dangerous project is dubious at best and it certainly poses a significant threat to our air and water quality, marine wildlife, and the precious coastline of our community.  There are safer and healthier ways to meet our energy needs.  We should be focusing on reducing energy demands and increasing the use of safer alternative energy sources.  Clearly this project is too risky to move forward.  The State Lands Commission recognized this Monday and I hope that the California Coastal Commission will also vote to reject this ill conceived project.”
