Capps’ Statement On The GAO’s Report On The Public Safety Consequences Of A Terrorist Attack On Tankers Carrying LNG

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lois Capps today issued the following statement regarding the Government Accountability Office’s report, Public Safety Consequences of a Terrorist Attack on a Tanker Carrying Liquefied Natural Gas, which was issued today by top members of the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“The Government Accountability Office (GAO) report issued today confirms my serious concerns that we have not adequately investigated the public safety implications of offshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities.  Clearly the public safety risks surrounding these facilities are serious enough to warrant extensive additional study.  We should proceed with an abundance of caution when it comes to considering development of any new offshore LNG facilities that potentially threaten onshore communities.  As a Member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, I am pleased that Chairman John Dingell (D-MI) has already announced plans to hold hearings on the findings of this important GAO report.   As someone who represents a community where an LNG facility is being considered, I plan on thoroughly questioning GAO officials about the public safety threat that these facilities potentially pose and the implications of this most recent report’s findings.”
