WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congresswoman Lois Capps thanked Tyler Wilson, a high school student from San Luis Obispo, for his valuable service as a Congressional Page during the 2007 summer session. Wilson will be entering the 12th grade at San Luis Obispo High School this fall, where he is active in theatre, baseball and mock trial.
“It was a pleasure to have Tyler working with us in Washington, D.C. this past summer,” said Congresswoman Lois Capps. “The Congressional Page Program is a prestigious program that requires an extensive time commitment and dedication from its participants. Many former pages go on to successful careers in a variety of fields, including public service. As a U.S. House of Representatives Page Tyler represented the 23rd Congressional District with distinction and we wish him well in his future endeavors. Tyler is a remarkable young man who has a promising future ahead of him. I appreciate his service this summer and I hope that he enjoyed his experience working in the U.S. Capitol.”
As part of the U.S. House of Representatives Page Program, Wilson was one of 72 Pages studying and working in Washington, D.C. during the summer Congressional session. He served as support staff for the U.S. House of Representatives by working in the Democratic cloakroom, taking messages for Members of Congress, running errands between House Office Buildings and the Capitol and preparing the House Floor for sessions.
For more than 150 years Congressional Pages have been serving as messengers for the U.S. Congress. Pages must be high school juniors and at least 16 years of age. Several Members of Congress as well as other prominent Americans have served as congressional pages. Some notable Congressional Pages include Bill Gates and Tiger Woods.
Congresswoman Capps’ office nominates constituents interested in applying to U.S. House of Representatives Page Program when openings occur. The selection process is very competitive and is based on scholastic achievements, involvement in school and community activities, and leadership achievements.
