Capps, McMorris Elected To Serve As Women’s Caucus Co-Chairs

Bipartisan Women’s Caucus boasts a record 74 members

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the bipartisan Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues announced that Congresswoman Lois Capps (D-CA) and Congresswoman Cathy McMorris (R-WA) had been elected by their Caucus colleagues to serve as Co-Chairs for the 110th Congress.  The Women’s Caucus was founded by fifteen Congresswomen on April 19, 1977.  For thirty years the Caucus has been dedicated to advancing the cause of women and their families through a bipartisanship approach to problem solving.  Thirty years after its founding, the Women’s Caucus has grown tremendously, now boasting a record 74 Members.

“I am truly honored to have been selected by my Democratic colleagues to serve as Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus,” said Capps.  “For thirty years this ground breaking organization has worked to improve the lives of women by casting aside partisanship and embracing cooperation.  In the 110th Congress the Women’s Caucus will continue this proud tradition of bipartisanship, setting an example that I hope all of our colleagues will embrace.  Time and again the Women’s Caucus has demonstrated that we can best serve our constituents and the country by working together.  Congresswoman Cathy McMorris is a talented Representative who shares this strong commitment.  I look forward to working closely with her and the rest of the Women’s Caucus over the next two years as we pursue our bipartisan agenda to help women and their families.”

“The Women’s Caucus is a unique opportunity to work in a bipartisan fashion on issues that impact women here in the United States and throughout the world,” said McMorris. “As female leaders, it is important that we are able to come together to promote solutions to the problems facing young girls, women and families. I look forward to co-chairing this caucus with Congresswoman Lois Capps and working on a new legislative agenda that will further the cause and help inspire women worldwide.”

The formal “passing of the gavel” ceremony welcoming Congresswoman Capps and Congresswoman McMorris as the new Co-Chairs and honoring the past service of 109th Congress Co-Chairs Congresswoman Hilda Solis (D-CA) and Congresswoman Ginny Brown Waite (R-FL) will take place this Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. in the Rayburn House Office Building B-369.
