Capps Statement on the Presidential Primary Campaign

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lois Capps released the following statement regarding the ongoing Presidential primary campaign:

“This is an exciting time for America and I’m glad that California was able to play a key part in the nominee selection process.  As a Democrat I am particularly excited to see the enthusiasm among Democrats, Independents and Republicans for our Democratic candidates.  In primaries across the country, including California, we have seen record turnout and interest in this election and I am especially heartened to see historic participation among young people.  This enthusiasm reflects the American people’s strong desire to move our country in a new direction and to bring much needed change to the White House.  I think the robust support for the two Democratic candidates and the rather anemic interest in the Republican candidates bodes well for our party’s chances in the fall general election, not just for the Presidential race but for the House and the Senate as well as state and local races.

“Clearly the race for the nomination is far from over, particularly on the Democratic side.  I was proud to cast my vote in yesterday’s Democratic primary.  As a Super Delegate I have decided to stay neutral in the race for the time being.  I deeply respect and admire both Senator Obama and Senator Clinton.  I look forward to working closely with the eventual Democratic nominee to ensure that he or she is elected this November.

“Both candidates have run vibrant, competitive campaigns and enjoy strong grassroots support.  The high level of interest in the campaigns tells me the American people are taking this election very seriously.”
