CALLING ALL YOUNG ARTISTS!

Washington, D.C. -  The first signs of spring have finally arrived in Southern Ohio. Longer days and hopefully, warmer weather, will soon replace the long, gray days of winter. One of my favorite highlights of spring is hosting the annual Congressional Art Competition.

Just this week, I sent letters to art teachers across the Second Congressional District inviting them to participate in the 26th Annual Congressional Art Competition. This event is truly a unique opportunity for our young artists to showcase their outstanding talent. Last year, we had more than 100 students participate.

The Annual Art Competition is hosted by Members of Congress in most of the 435 Congressional districts across the nation, and is open to high school students. The winner from each Congressional district is awarded a $5,000 scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design and a paid trip to Washington, D.C. Additionally, each winner’s artwork is displayed in the tunnel that connects the House of Representatives to the U.S. Capitol building. The tunnel is used by Members of Congress and hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

It’s always a pleasure to look at the students’ artwork brightening the walls of the tunnel, particularly last year’s winning piece from the Second Congressional District by a promising, young artist from McNicholas High School

This year’s art entries will be on display on Friday, April 27th at the Union Township Civic Center in Clermont County. The display is open to everyone and free of charge, so I would encourage you and your families to stop by and take a look at the outstanding work of our up-and-coming local artists.

The artwork is judged by a panel of “celebrity judges” who take time out of their busy schedules to lend their expert eye and judge artwork in the following categories: Paintings, Drawings, Collage, Prints, Mixed Media, Computer Generated Art, and Photography. Awards are given for first place, second place, third place and 8 honorable mentions. In addition, each participant is presented with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition. Last year, some of our distinguished judges came from noteworthy area institutions like the Cincinnati Art Museum, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and the Cincinnati Arts Council.

All artwork is due to my Congressional office in Kenwood (8044 Montgomery Rd., Suite 540) on Monday, April 23rd. For more information, please contact my Congressional Art Competition coordinator, Catherine Mills, at 513.791.0381.
