The Washington Hotline

Week of October 6, 2008

After the House adjourned last Friday, I returned to Pennsylvania where I have been traveling throughout the 3rd district meeting with local families, employers and other community leaders.  Monday, I was privileged to speak at the Regional Manufacturing Forum hosted by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining.  This week I was happy to tour the Technical Precision facility in Hadley as well as Penn United Technology’s plant in Butler.  Read on to learn more about my week.

Great Lakes Compact
After nearly five years of negotiations, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact was signed into law on October 3, 2008.  This interstate compact will manage water diversions, withdrawals and consumptive use proposals.  From recreation to tourism to transportation, the Great Lakes have served as a vital resource to the health and wealth of our regional economy, helping local businesses to grow and bring new jobs to our area.  By ratifying this Compact we will build upon the success of our treasured natural resource and ensure bordering states have access to the tools they need to protect, preserve and manage our shared watershed, the Great Lakes.  More of story…

Tribute to a Great Pennsylvanian
Rep. John Peterson has decided to retire this year after twelve years of dedicated service to Pennsylvania’s 5th district.  He leaves behind him a truly remarkable record as a public servant.  It has been a great privilege to serve with John Peterson and my distinguished colleague from Pennsylvania will very much be missed.

The State of the Economy
This week I met with important local groups including the Greenville Rotary and the Warren County Chamber of Commerce to discuss the state of the economy.  The American economy is clearly facing its greatest challenge in decades.  Congress needs to tackle this challenge by enacting an energy plan that lowers prices at the pump and stabilizes the energy market, embracing strong pro-growth tax policies that will benefit everyone by reinvigorating the economy and by building a health care system that guarantees universal access to affordable, quality care for every American at every stage of life.
