The Washington Hotline

Week of October 20, 2008

This week I continued to travel throughout Pennsylvania’s 3rd district, speaking with local families about the important issues facing the nation today. Tuesday, I met with the Butler Kiwanis club to discuss the struggling American economy and Wednesday, I was happy to join Sen. Specter to highlight the federal government’s commitment to job creating economic initiatives in northwestern Pennsylvania.  Read on to learn more about my week.

Stronger Economic Policy
Tuesday, I met with members of the Butler Kiwanis club to discuss the state of the American economy.  The economy is clearly facing its greatest challenge in decades.  Washington must move forward with real, fundamental tax reform and preserve the pro-growth policies previously enacted by Congress.  Our tax system is dysfunctional and has become an impossible burden for the average taxpayer.  At the same time, our tax system places American employers at a disadvantage in the global economy and encourages jobs to be shipped off shore.  Congress must also advance a trade agenda that will effectively enforce U.S. trade laws and bring trading partners line with international trading rules.

Job Creation
Thursday, I joined Sen. Specter to discuss job creating initiatives in northwestern Pennsylvania.  I have had the honor of working with Senator Specter to ensure our region has access to the federal resources we need to help expand our local economy, create an environment in which our local employers can thrive and boost job growth throughout our region.  I am proud to have led on bringing federal dollars back to remedy the Erie sewer system that helped create a swimmable bay, to make the small business incubator at the former Boys and Girls Club a reality, and to advance the runway extension which is a critical piece of infrastructure that will create jobs an opportunity in the region.  I am happy to report that since being elected to Congress in 1994, I have brought back more than $150 million to Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District for local projects.

3rd District Services
Don’t forget, my 3rd district staff can assist local residents with problems they might have with federal agencies such as Housing, Social Security, Medicare, military and veteran’s affairs and immigration. U.S. Flags can be purchased through my office and we can even assist you with your visit to the nation’s capital.
