College Aid and Tax Assistance in 5th Congressional District

CHICAGO, IL—Earlier this year, U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) announced that according to the IRS, nearly $110 million in tax refund checks remain unclaimed.  At least 115,478 taxpayers nation-wide are due refunds, averaging about $953, and there are up to 779 unclaimed refunds in 5th District.  Please click here to view the list of those with unpaid refunds.

Taxpayers who believe they have an unclaimed check can also visit http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96596,00.html.  Those without access to the Internet who think they may be missing a refund check should first check their records or contact their tax preparer, then call the IRS toll-free assistance line at 1-800-829-1954.

On Saturday, January 26, 2008, the Office of U.S. Representative Rahm Emanuel, kicked off tax season with the first of eleven free clinics for college financial aid and tax preparation services for residents of the 5th Congressional District. Over the last five years, with volunteers from the Tax Assistance Program – It Adds Up (TAP), Emanuel has provided hundreds of constituents with help filling out their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms and tax returns.  Last year, Congressman Emanuel helped Chicago-area families obtain  $461,744 in tax refunds! This year, our office and TAP helped save 5th district families $837,471!
