Rep. Scott to Host Teen Summit on Youth Violence at IC Norcom High School

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, (D-VA-3), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security of the House Judiciary Committee, will hold a Teen Summit on The Youth Promise Act to discuss ways to reduce what the Children’s Defense Fund calls “the cradle to prison pipeline” of young people in urban and rural communities in the United States.  This summit is scheduled for Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at the I. C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, VA from 6:00P.M. - 8:00 P.M.      

 

The summit gives high school students from South Hampton Roads a forum in which to address their concerns and thoughts on juvenile violence and crime. To assist in this endeavor, Congressman Scott has invited a panel of experts who handle these issues that impact  our community.

 

The panel includes Dr. Dewey Cornell, clinical psychologist and professor, Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia and Director of the UVA Youth Violence Project; and the Honorable Jerrauld Jones, former Director of the Virginia  Department Juvenile Justice and current Chief Judge, Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, 4th Judicial District of Virginia.     

 

Congressman Scott has introduced  H. R. 3846, the Youth Promise Act, which focuses on using evidence and research-based prevention and intervention approaches to reduce juvenile and adult crime. 

The Teen Summit is free and open to the public. All are encouraged to attend, especially teens and their families.  The Summit will be held at I.C. Norcom High School at 1801 London Boulevard, Portsmouth,VA, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
