Rep. Scott Hosts Media Roundtable on Youth PROMISE Act

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott, (D-VA-3), will host a media roundtable on H.R. 3846, the Youth PROMISE Act on Tuesday, February 26, 2008.  The event will be held in Room 2257 in the Rayburn House Office Building at 8:30 am.  Scott will present to the media why America must focus on prevention and intervention strategies to reduce the high number of American youth in what the Children’s Defense Fund calls the Cradle to Prison Pipeline.   

Tuesday’s event will provide information on both H.R. 3846 as well as the underlying prevention and intervention policies that work effectively to reduce crime. 

 

The Youth PROMISE Act focuses on using evidence and research-based prevention and intervention approaches to reduce juvenile and adult crime. 

 

Presenters at the event will include:

·          Dr. Dewey Cornell, Clinical Psychologist and Professor, Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia and Director of the UVA Youth Violence Project;

·          Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith, Henry Pickering Walcott Professor of the Practice of Public Health and Associate Dean for Diversity, Department of Health Policy and Management, Harvard School of Public Health;

·          Dr. Deborah Phillips, Professor of Psychology and Public Policy and Co-Director of the Center for Research on Children in the United States, University of Georgetown;

·          Vincent Schiraldi, Director, District of Columbia Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services;

·          Lynn White, Senior Policy Associate for Juvenile Justice, Children’s Defense Fund; and

·          Miriam Rollin, Vice President of Public Policy, Fight Crime:  Invest in Kids.
