Rep. Scott Lauds Black Farmer Provisions in the Farm Bill

(Washington D.C.) - Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA-03) issued the following statement on today’s passage by the U.S. House of Representatives of the Farm, Nutrition and Bioenergy Act of 2007:

“I am pleased the farm bill approved today will provide significant relief to tens of thousands black farmers whose claims of discrimination were not heard under the Pigford v. Glickman class action case.  Ten years ago, my House colleagues and I worked for an administrative fix to extend the statute of limitations, so that the farmers who were denied claims could be heard.

“Unfortunately, thousands have still been denied a chance to present their cases in Court due to an arbitrary deadline.  The language in the Farm Bill passed by the House today will afford these farmers the opportunity to have their claims of discrimination heard on the merits.”
