(Washington D.C.) - Today, Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA-03) voted in favor of H.R. 2956, the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 223 to 201 (Roll Call No. 624).
The Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act requires a responsible redeployment of U.S. troops beginning within 120 days of enactment and ending by April 1, 2008. The legislation also requires the President to publicly justify any additional missions in Iraq for the U.S. military after the withdrawal.
“A real change of course in Iraq is long overdue,” said Rep. Scott. “An overwhelming majority of the American people now recognize that we must withdraw from Iraq. The Administration’s original time estimate for this war was ‘six days, six weeks, no more than six months.’ Four years after ‘Mission Accomplished,’ the American people continue to be told that ‘victory is around the corner, just give us more time.’ We are now six months into the President’s troop surge and things today are worse than they have ever been. Recent Intelligence reports even warn that al-Qaeda is even stronger and better positioned to strike the United States than it was when the war began.
“It’s time to begin a responsible withdrawal from Iraq. Approximately 600 more of our brave men and women in uniform have died this year. It is immoral to keep our troops indefinitely stuck in the middle of a civil war marked increasingly by sectarian violence.”
