Nadler Lauds Mt. Sinai on Study Confirming Thousands of our Nation’s Heroes Sick from WTC Attacks; Demands Federal Government Response

NEW YORK, NY – Congressman Jerrold Nadler issued the following statement in response to the release by Mount Sinai Medical Center’s World Trade Center Medical Monitoring Program of their study examining the health of first responders who worked at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11th attacks.  The finding of the multi-year study shows that the 9/11-related health impacts on the first responders and other rescue and recovery workers are significant, and that these first responders face a variety of illnesses and conditions specific to the World Trade Center environmental disaster.

“I want to congratulate Mt. Sinai for their excellent work on this study.  This report is so very important because of its scope, and the fact that it carefully documents the severity of the heath problems faced by the thousands of 9/11 first responders.  But frankly, the study’s real significance is not what it tells us per se, but that it makes it much, much harder for the government to deny what we’ve all known for years now.” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler.

“This study confirms, without question, that New Yorkers are suffering from a health crisis resulting from the World Trade Center disaster.  The federal government lied and failed to protect the health of our nation’s heroes, and has continued to do so to this day.  Now is the time that our government must act and provide treatment to the first responders, as well as those who have faced chronic exposure in their homes, schools and offices. They must stop their denials and delays, and must provide appropriate testing and cleanup for the remaining WTC indoor contamination and health monitoring and treatment for everyone affected, or the consequences will surely get worse and worse.”
