Rep. Nadler Lauds Mayor’s Community Notification Plan, Urges Constituents to Register

NEW YORK – Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08) today lauded Mayor Bloomberg on the launch of “Notify NYC.”  This program would allow for the timely dissemination of critical data in the case of an emergency by e-mail, text messages and reverse-911 alerts.  The system is currently limited to Lower Manhattan, the Northeast Bronx, the Rockaways and Southwest Staten Island.

Since September 11, 2001, the Lower Manhattan community, in conjunction with Congressman Nadler, had called for the creation of such a notification system that would provide up-to-the-minute, accurate, and potentially life-saving information.  Early this year, following the tragic fire at the former Deutsche Bank, Rep. Nadler provided testimony at various City Council hearings again calling for the immediate launch of an effective community notification system.

“The unyielding attention of the residents of Lower Manhattan to this helped launch this vital tool,” said Rep. Nadler.  “I have long called for a system to disseminate accurate and timely information to the community in the event of an emergency.  Preparedness and information can be the difference between safety and harm in emergencies, and I look forward to the expansion of this program throughout New York City.  I applaud the Mayor for taking this step to protect the safety of New Yorkers.”

Rep. Nadler encourages New Yorkers to go to http://www.nyc.gov/notifynyc and register before Monday, December 10, when the system will be activated.
