White House Insists on Inclusion of Iraq War Funding with No Conditions
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), a member of the Out of Iraq Caucus, today denounced the President’s demand for unconditional funds for the war in Iraq. On Monday, the House adopted an omnibus funding measure without any money for the war in Iraq.
However, under pressure from the White House, the House and Senate negotiators included in the reconciled version $70 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The funding is not tied to any requirements for a specific withdrawal, and does not require the Administration to demonstrate any progress in Iraq.
“Yet again, this President has failed to listen to the American people who so clearly want an end to our occupation of Iraq,” said Rep. Nadler. “He has hijacked the appropriations process to fund his war without any meaningful checks. He continues to rebuke any attempt to demand clear progress and the foundation for our withdrawal from Iraq. Like a child throwing a temper tantrum, President Bush threatened to veto the entire Federal domestic budget unless unconditional funds for the war in Iraq were included. We must end our involvement with this sectarian civil war in Iraq that we can neither settle nor win.”
