Nadler Announces Projects in Labor-HHS Appropriations Bill

Funds Included for Warbasse Community Services Project, Roosevelt Hospital and Jazz at Lincoln Center

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), who represents parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, hailed the passage of the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill. That measure, adopted yesterday, includes $200,000 for the Warbasse Community Services Project in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn, $200,000 for the Roosevelt Hospital, and $150,000 for Jazz at Lincoln Center. The spending bill must still be reconciled with the Senate before heading to the President for his signature.

"I am thrilled to support these projects to provide for the medical and educational needs of the Eighth Congressional District," said Rep. Nadler. "Each of these projects works to improve the lives of my constituents. I am proud to support these programs as they continue to serve the needs of our community."

The funds for Warbasse Community Services will help senior citizens maintain their independence through programs targeted to address mental health needs, especially those of dementia. The program supports the Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC) at Warbasse so that seniors can remain in their homes and age in place. The project works on early detection, care-giver training, and community education. Programs will be coordinated with the Kingsbrook Medical Center, which has a Geriatric Psychiatry Department.

"I am pleased that federal funds will be used for the first time to support the programs at Warbasse, which provide such important services to the seniors who live there. Promoting the independence of our seniors is an effort worth supporting," said Rep. Nadler.

Roosevelt Hospital provides a wide range of medical services to the diverse populations of Manhattan's Midtown and West Side. These funds will serve to address expected future growth through the expansion of the Emergency Department of Roosevelt Hospital. This expansion will provide much needed services for a range of emergency situations by making improvements to the Radiology Suite, the Haz-Mat Emergency Response Unit, and the Cardiac Evaluation and Care Unit.

"The bill we passed today will help Roosevelt Hospital improve its emergency room and better serve our community. This hospital is critical to serving the medical needs of the West Side," Rep. Nadler added.

The funds for Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) will help enable jazz education programs and efforts to preserve the great American art form that is jazz. The program provides for a nationally broadcast radio program and education programming for all age groups. JALC also does outreach to schools, by providing curriculums for Jazz education and resources for high school Jazz Bands to perform and succeed. JALC also produces workshop performances for schools throughout New York City.

"Jazz at Lincoln Center is one of our great cultural institutions, and I am proud to help its educational and outreach programs. Students and others across the city will benefit from the excellent work of JALC," said Rep. Nadler.###
