Nadler Demands Harris Apologize for Disgraceful Comments

"Rep. Harris has demonstrated a level of bigotry and moral blindness
unworthy of a public official.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jerrold Nadler today condemned the recent remarks by Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL).  In a recent speech, Rep. Harris told the Florida Baptist Witness, the weekly journal of the Florida Baptist State Convention, that “if you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin."

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement;

            “Katherine Harris has betrayed the founding principles of this nation, and millions of decent, patriotic Americans, by stating that only Christians are fit to hold public office. By suggesting that Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Moslems or persons of other faiths will ‘legislate sin’ Rep. Harris has demonstrated a level of bigotry and moral blindness unworthy of a public official.

            “Rep. Harris owes Americans of all faiths an apology, not just excuses.  I call on President Bush, and other leaders of the Republican Party, to make clear that there is no room in American politics of this disgraceful religious bigotry.”
