Clinton and Nadler Announce Resolution in Both Chambers of Congress Urging Stable Housing for Individuals with HIV/AIDS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Congressman Jerrold Nadler, along with Representatives Henry Waxman, Barbara Lee, Joseph Crowley and Christopher Shays, introduced a concurrent resolution stating the need for quality housing nationwide for people living with HIV/AIDS.  Research has shown that those living with HIV/AIDS have a much better chance of remaining healthy, avoiding risky practices and protecting the health of others when they are living in safe and stable housing.  Too many of those with the disease have become homeless, or have been relegated to unsafe, temporary and crowded living conditions, where healthcare and control of the disease are severely compromised.

“We need to expand access to prevention, care, treatment and support for people living with HIV, and housing is an important component of those efforts.  Today’s action will help to raise awareness of the benefits of housing in addressing HIV/AIDS, and I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to secure access to safe, secure and stable housing for New Yorkers living with HIV,” said Senator Clinton.

"I am very pleased to join my colleagues – Representatives Waxman, Lee, Crowley and Shays in the House and Senator Clinton in the Senate – in introducing this important resolution,” Rep. Nadler stated.  “Today, we are affirming our collective commitment to promoting stable housing for people with HIV/AIDS as part of a larger strategy to combat the AIDS epidemic across the United States.  A growing body of evidence suggests that living conditions and socio-economic realities are of paramount importance in controlling HIV/AIDS.  What's more, housing is a basic human right which has been proven to increase healthy practices that limit the spread of this disease.  We can do much more to address the AIDS crisis by safeguarding access to adequate housing."
