Celebrating The 60th Anniversary Of The Independence Of Israel

(WASHINGTON, DC)–Today, May 14th, we commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Independence of Israel. The United States and Israel have a special relationship that began when President Truman was the first world leader to officially recognize the Jewish State.

The formation of Israel was a struggle. From this struggle a prosperous democratic nation has emerged. A nation that is a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, a nation premised on freedom, justice and peace, a nation that offers freedom and equality for all its citizens.

On this day in 1948 the future Prime Minister, Mr. David Ben Gurion, set out the principles that would guide Israel. These principles still guide Israel today, as it endeavors to develop the country for the benefit of all inhabitants, promotes equal social and political rights for all citizens and freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture.
