Payne Calls for Free and Fair Elections in Nigeria

Congressman Donald M. Payne, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health, is calling for free and fair elections in Nigeria.

Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, has made important progress in strengthening its fragile democracy even in the face of enormous challenges.  A free and fair election will further strengthen the foundation of democracy in Nigeria and beyond.  This election would be the third since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule and would mark Nigeria’s first transfer of power from one civilian government to another.

Flawed elections could have grave ramifications for Nigeria as well as the region.  In addition to voter disempowerment, flawed elections would undermine the status of the new government and intensify simmering tensions.  Instability in Nigeria, given its stature in Africa, can lead to instability and turmoil in the region.

Payne stated, “If Nigeria succeeds tomorrow in having transparent and nonviolent elections, President Obasanjo can end his presidency on a positive note.  Furthermore, successful elections in Nigeria will only strengthen the country's democratic institutions and give a boost to democratic governance across Africa.”
