It is a pleasure to be here this
afternoon with Governor McGreevy, Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox
and New Jersey Transit Executive Director George Warrington to reaffirm
our commitment to strengthening mass transit in our region. In recent
months, many concerns have been raised about the problems of congestion
associated with uncontrolled growth in both cities and suburbs.
Improvements in mass transit can alleviate problems of traffic congestion
and environmental pollution as part of an overall effort to enact “smart
growth” policies.
The Port Authority’s commitment of $250 million to help secure Bi-level
cars to increase the capacity of passengers traveling to New York will
be a great step forward. It is important to the economic vitality
of our region, especially in the aftermath of September 11th, that we continue
to move ahead with confidence in improving our infrastructure and expanding
modes of transportation. I look forward to working together to achieve
this goal. Thank you.
