I’m pleased to join Police Director
Carter, Mayor Cunningham, and my colleagues from the United States Congress
in highlighting the allocation of this important federal funding which
will be used to upgrade the Jersey City Police Department’s public safety
communications systems.
The $1.75 million in Commerce, State, Justice funds along with the $10.7
million in Department of Defense emergency monies which we were able to
secure in Washington will enable the Jersey City Police Department to make
critical improvements to enhance the safety of local residents.
It is important that we take all necessary steps to improve emergency preparedness
in the Jersey City community.
By enhancing the communications infrastructure, we will ensure that
Jersey City is better able to respond to daily police and fire emergencies.
In addition, after the September 11th tragedy which touched so many of
our New Jersey communities, we are all more aware of the need to have state-of-the-art
equipment in the event of another terrorist attack.
When we return to Washington, we will begin a new appropriations process,
and the New Jersey delegation will be united in continuing our efforts
to build on the progress we have made in strengthening Jersey City and
surrounding communities.
